Answer:

The ancient Roman traditions of independence and public service and the importance of educated and dedicated citizens provided examples for the framers of the Constitution. Because the states were originally British colonies, they were familiar with the British tradition of freedom and rights of citizens expressed in the Magna Carta and the English Bill of Rights. Similar ideas were expressed in the Bill of Rights of the United States Constitution. The American colonial experience helped shape the Constitution because of the colonists’ tradition of written documentation that spelled out the powers and limits of government. In addition, the framers of the Constitution addressed the faults of the British government when they made the President the commander in chief of the military and set up an independent court system. The Enlightenment provided the framers with the belief in the natural rights to life, liberty, and property and the view of the Constitution as a contract that both the government and citizens must honor.
