The sum of two numbers is 12. The difference between twice the first number and the second number is 33. Find the two numbers

Respuesta :

2x - y = 33
2(7) - y = 33
14 - y = 33
-y = 19
y = -19

Therefore, the two numbers are: 7 and -19, in that order.

Let the two numbers be = x and y

Sum of these two numbers is 12 , so

[tex]x+y=12[/tex] from here we get, [tex]x=12-y[/tex]

The difference between twice the first number and the second number is 33

[tex]2x-y=33[/tex]  ....(1)

Putting the value of x=12-y in equation (1)

[tex]2(12-y)-y=33[/tex]

[tex]24-2y-y=33[/tex]

[tex]-3y=9[/tex]

[tex]y=-3[/tex]

As x+y=12

[tex]x+(-3)=12[/tex]

[tex]x=15[/tex]

Hence the two numbers are = 15 and -3
