All living organisms are composed of two types of compounds, organic and inorganic. Organic compounds are compounds that are derived from living things. They always contain both carbon and hydrogen. Inorganic compounds often contain a metal cation and a nonmetal or polyatomic anion, are not derived from living things, and typically do not have carbon or carbon and hydrogen. They are: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids.

Carbohydrates are made of sugars. The primary function of carbohydrates is to release energy to cells. Some examples of carbohydrates are potatoes, bread and candy. The building blocks of lipids are fatty acids. Fatty acids store and release energy, serve as thermal insulation and provide cushioning for our organs. Lipids are found in foods like salmon, avocado, nuts and olive oil. Proteins are made up of long chains of amino acids. The purpose of protein is to build and repair cells. Protein is found in meat, beans and dairy products. Nucleic acids are our DNA and RNA. They are made from nucleotides. Nucleic acids store our hereditary information.
