Slash and burn Agriculture is a frequently utilised method of food production in which forests or wildland are cleared and any residual flora is burned. The ash layer that forms offers a nutritionally layer to help fertilise crops on newly cleared soil.

This process only makes soil fruitful for a few years until the nutrients are depleted. Farmers must forsake the degraded property and relocate to a new plot, which will need cutting more forest.

Slash-and-burn Agriculture has been practised for thousands of years throughout Central America and Mexico. However, with more people than ever attempting to survive in the face of diminishing natural resources, the impact is particularly damaging and unsustainable today. Deforestation, a natural consequence of clearing forests for cropland; loss of habitat and species; increased air pollution and carbon emission into the environment contributes to global climate change; and growth in accidental fires are just a few of the issues that occur as a result of this technique of growing crops.

Slash and burn agriculture also causes substantial land degradation, floods, poor water quality, and/or dust clouds, as dirt washes away after heavy rains and blows away during dryness without trees and vegetation and their lateral roots.
