The Spanish-American war took place in 1898, it was a conflict between the United States and Spain to end the Spanish control over the Americas. The two fronts on which American forces battled were the Philippines and Cuba. Their main strategy on each front, was first to destroy the Spanish fleet both in the Philippines and Cuba in order to keep the naval forces from sailing east and attack them, and to limit the Spanish forces to resupply themselves.
The main strategy of the U.S. forces was to exert and increase pressure on several of the possessions that Spain had in more marginal areas, such as Puerto Rico, in the Caribbean, or the Philippines, in Asia, without having to intervene in either Havana or the Iberian Peninsula and with the main goal of finishing the war (and liberating Cuba) in the shortest amount of time.
