The future and development of a country is the responsibility of every citizen. Therefore, participating in the democratic process is a must for a society not only to assure the future of the country or to fulfill a duty, but also to strengthen their identities, traditions and the vision a community share about the future (national ethos). In addition, democratic processes allow societies to take place in the search for the common good and the duty to behave toward everyone’s country (patriotism). Moreover, participating in such process implies doing it in a responsible way, paying special attention to everyone’s interests, and opinions; it is not a simple act of social participation, it includes respect for other's point of views and more importantly, it should contribute to the common well of a society (civic responsibility). Finally, working together, and participating together is better than doing it separately, after all and in order to create a more perfect union, citizens need to participate in governing their nation, to unify and to make it into the place they want to live in (building perfect union).

This is my explanation about the importance of participating in the democratic process and how it reflects the national ethos, patriotism, civic responsibility, and our progress in building a "more perfect union."

  • We, as citizens, have the right to elect our political leaders.
  • It is a right but also, our obligation.
  • It is stated in the Constitution of the United States.
  • Our participation is of the utmost importance to keep our democracy alive.
  • Our national ethos, the present, and future of the United States depend on our active participation in all the decisions that concern our country.
  • In doing so, we are conducting in a Patriotic way, fulfilling our rights and obligations derived from being a US citizen.
  • Patriotism does not mean happily celebrating the 4th of July or wearing US apparel.
  • Patriotism means the love for our nation and the participation in building and maintaining our democracy.
  • Our civic participation is always needed to build a better country.
  • We will be able to build a perfect union when we show respect and tolerance for differences.
  • When we support and tolerate diversity, in peace and understanding.

We conclude that as citizens of the United States, we have the right and obligation to maintain our civic participation in patriotic ways to keep on building a better America, despite the difficult circumstances.
