I think the figurative language here would be Personification, Metaphor, Simile and etc, because the author is comparing objects.

like to have seen these creatures then: stars in the dark overhead and here a spiny constellation draped over the rocks.

"a galaxy spread out at our feet"

reminders of other worlds we’ll probably never see. And here, underfoot, half a dozen sea stars, about to disappear underwater where they’ll go on too, misshapen maybe and less visible, doing what they’ve always done: making their slow way through a galaxy spread out at our feet.

and such

Barbara Hurd uses figurative language in many ways to promote the central idea that sea stars and some other animals have capabilities that are greater than men.

  • Personification was used when she said that a host of sea stars were stranded.
  • Personification was also used when Hurd mentioned that after regeneration, the sea stars remained unburdened.
  • Imagery was used in describing the sea star's movements.
  • Allusion was used to call to mind Man when she said, "Oh Ahab..."

From the foregoing, we learn of how Barbara Hurd applied several figurative languages to describe the sea stars and contrast them to man.

Personification was most often used to assign the attributes that man is known for, to the sea stars.
