Unit Test: Hamlet

In drama, a character’s tragic flaw is the character trait that leads directly to his or her downfall in the work. Many critics and scholars argue that Hamlet’s tragic flaw is his tendency toward inaction—his inability to act. Do you agree? Why or why not? Cite specific examples from the text to support your response

Respuesta :

I definitely agree. Had Hamlet had acted promptly and and without hesitation as he had promised the ghost he would do, it is hard to imagine any of tragic outcomes later in the play would have occurred. His tendency to procrastinate is what led to the deaths of so many innocents such as Polonius, Laertes, Claudius, and his acquaintances from the University of Wittenberg: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. We can also say that he is also indirectly involved in the deaths of his love Ophelia (drowning) and of his mother Gertrude - mistakenly poised by Claudius. Ultimately, his procrastination may have led to his own tragic demise.

Concerning Hamlet's tendency toward inaction, we can write as to whether we agree or disagree in the following manner:

- Yes, I agree that Hamlet's tragic flaw is his inaction.

- Hamlet spends the whole play questioning his own decisions and delaying his actions. Because of that, innocent people end up dead.

- His father's ghost urges him to take revenge for his death, but Hamlet hesitates. Even when the perfect moment to kill Claudius arises, Hamlet decides not to do it.

- He also cannot decide whether to kill himself or not. Hamlet is afraid of the sin such an action represents as well as of the unknown.

- Hamlet is also incapable of killing his mother, even though he believes she betrayed his father.

- In the end, what leads to his demise is Hamlet's inability to act. That is his tragic flaw.

  • "Hamlet" is a tragic play by William Shakespeare in which the homonym character is incapable of taking revenge.
  • Hamlet suffers throughout the play, not knowing what to do.
  • Should he kill himself to stop suffering for his father's death? Or should he avenge his father?
  • It is his inability to act that leads Hamlet to a bad ending. Had he chosen to act, his fate might have been better.
