DNA polymerase plays a role in DNA replication and usually works in pairs to copy one molecule of double-stranded DNA into two new double stranded DNA molecules. (it makes DNA from nucleotides)
The two functions of DNA polymerase are as follows:
- It adds nucleotides to the 3' end of the growing chain
- It proofreads the nucleotide chain after synthesizing them.
DNA POLYMERASE:
- DNA polymerase is one of the most important enzymes in DNA replication, which is the process whereby new copy of DNA molecule is synthesized.
- A DNA molecule is double-stranded, hence, it is first separated into two single strands. Each strand is a template for a new DNA strand, which is synthesized by DNA polymerase by adding nucleotide bases that complements the old strand it is attached to.
- Asides the function of adding nucleotides, DNA polymerase also proofreads the nucleotide chain after replication for any error.
- Therefore, the two functions of DNA polymerase are as follows:
