The new Constitution created a national government (or as people call it, a separation of powers) consisting of 3 main branches. A legislative, an executive, and a judicial branch (which included a system of checks and balances). Secondly, however, it divided power between the federal government and the states (note, the Articles of Confederation left the power to said states).
