They later made improvements and were used to transport mail and items across rivers and seas. Steamboats were also used as military ships during the American Civil War. The steamboats that remain active have become cruiser ships and are mostly used for leisure time, one of the most famous ones is the American Queen which is the largest operating river steamboat.
