3x+2 = x+4(x+2)  

distribute

3x+2 = x+4x+8

combine like terms

3x+2 = 5x +8

subtract 3x from each side

2 = 2x +8

subtract 8 from each side

-6 = 2x

divide by 2

-3 = x
