Haiti
The only slave colony that rose up to create an independent country was Haiti in 1804.
Toussaint L'Ouverture led slaves in Haiti in a revolt against French leadership beginning in the 1790's. The revolutionaries fought against the oppression of the French and were inspired by the independence of the US. Napoleon would take on the fight after coming to power. He forced the surrender of L'Ouverture and when he attempted to live his life, was arrested and taken to France where he would die. Dessalines stepped up as leader of a new rebel force who managed to fight Napoleon's forces until their surrender at the end of 1803.
