Paraphrasing refers to rewriting the words of an author using different words, mostly to achieve more clarity. It is also used in order to avoid plagiarism by providing your own interpretation of a text. A paraphrase of this text would look something like this:
"The first thing I noticed when I got to the coast was the ocean, and a slave ship waiting for its cargo. I was very surprised at first, but then became afraid when I was carried on board.
