Phyllis Wheatley and Merci Otis Warren, both wrote about freedom and slavery.
Phyllis Wheatley (1753 – 1784) was born in West Africa and brought in as a slave to North America. The Wheatley family to whom she was sold, taught her to read and write and encouraged her to take up poetry. She is the first African-American female poet.
Merci Otis Warren (1728 – 1814) was a political writer, who supported the American Revolution and encouraged the colonists to stand up against the British, through her writings and propaganda work.
