A theme is the central topic of a text. It can often be summed up in a single word and if is identified through the actions or thoughts of the characters in a novel.
There are some themes that are so common to all cultures and all time periods that have almost "universal" relevance. Some examples are love, war, and coming-of-age stories (the transformation that minors undergo when they become adults).
