The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan to help its Communist government.
Afghanistan was under the Soviet Union's sphere of influence and the communist government was threatened by the Taliban. The Taliban was and is a group of nationalists wanting to restore traditional government in Afghanistan. Though they were not advocating democracy they at least wanted to end the communist government. The US supported this action but the Soviet Union invaded to support the communist government. The war in Afghanistan was similar to the US effort in Vietnam. It was a long drawn out war with the Taliban fighting for an ideology that the Soviet Union could not defeat.
Despite talks regarding disarmament and peaceful resolution to the Cold War, the Soviet Union's action in Afghanistan created tension between the USSR and the US once again. The 1980's would begin with Ronald Reagan escalating the Cold War and suggesting the Soviet Union could not be trusted to deescalate the Cold War. However, the Soviet Union suffered financially from the extended war with Afghanistan and decades of military spending. Their economic issues would lead to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union between 1989-1992.
