During the first half of the 19th century, the United States were mostly an agricultural country. Europeans started arriving around this time for cheap land that they can put to production and the wages were almost 5 times higher than in Europe. Most of the immigrantes of the time came from northern and western Europe. They came from Ireland (due to the potato famine in 1845), the failure of the German Revolution from 1848 also created considerable migration, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, England, Scotland and Wales were also countries with a considerable amount of immigration coming to America. The largest number of this population concentrated on New York, New Orleans, Boston, Philadelphia and Baltimore.
