The Mountain region of North Carolina lies between the Piedmont and the state of Tennessee. The mountains are part of the Appalachian chain where the Eastern range is called the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Western range is the Great Smoky Mountains. This region was the last settled by the Europeans. The Cherokee Indian Reservation is located across the range.
