Any compounds, not only sodium chloride, does not retain any properties of their constituent elements. In sodium chloride, the solid is white in color, but in sodium, it is silvery. In Chlorine, it is a yellowish gas. About the chemical properties of sodium chloride, for example, it dissolves in water. But for sodium, it reacts with water vigorously and it may even produce a golden yellow flame. This also explains the difference in chemical properties of compounds comparing with the properties of its constituent elements.
