The colonies had no representation in Parliament even though they were subject to its laws Some colonies resented the power of colonial governors who were sent and approved into office by Great Britain. Great Britain wanted strict control over colonial legislature which gave colonists even less representation. The colonies opposed the British taxes because they had no representation and were forced to pay the taxes. The Proclamation of 1763, which followed the French and Indian War, restricted the western movement of settlers and controlled what the settlers could do.
