Amerigo Vespucci sails the Atlantic
Treaty of Tordesillas is signed
The Protestant Reformation begins
Catholics and Protestants reach a long-awaited settlement
  1. On June 7, 1494, the governments of Spain and Portugal agreed to the Treaty of Tordesillas, named for the city in Spain in which it was created. The Treaty of Tordesillas neatly divided the “New World” of the Americas between the two superpowers.
  2. The voyage completed by Vespucci between May 1499 and June 1500 as navigator of an expedition of four ships sent from Spain under the command of Alonso de Ojeda is certainly authentic. (This is the second expedition of the traditional series.) Since Vespucci took part as a navigator, he certainly cannot have been inexperienced; but it does not seem possible that he had made a previous voyage (1497–98) in this area (i.e., around the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic coast from Florida to the Chesapeake Bay), though this matter remains unresolved.
  3. The Protestant Reformation began in Wittenberg, Germany, on October 31, 1517, when Martin Luther, a teacher, and a monk, published a document called Disputation on the Power of Indulgences or 95 Theses.
  4. In 1559 The final religious settlement recognized royal supremacy within the church. The Act of Supremacy made Elizabeth Supreme Governor of the Church and the church officials were required to take an oath of obedience to Elizabeth. Neither zealous Catholics nor Protestants were willing to accept a woman as Head of the Church – hence Elizabeth’s compromise of taking the title ‘Supreme Governor’ as opposed to ‘Head’.
