When we look at the periodic table as an atom's atomic number increases, its shells must accommodate an increasing number of electrons. It gives rise to the idea that increasing atomic numbers requires more shells so if we come across periods, the period number shows the nub er o shells in that period. For example, every element in the the first period)has one orbital for its electrons. All of the elements in the second period have two orbitals for their electrons and so on.
