how is the election of Abraham Lincoln as u.s president in 1860 connected to the Confederate attack on fort sumter on April 12-13, 1861?

Respuesta :

Before Lincoln’s election, the United States was very tense. The soon-to-be Confederates were in support of slavery, (as it was helpful on their large plantations) while the future union was against it. In the election of 1860, Abraham Lincoln ran to represent the northern states, while two other candidates represented the southern ones. Because the South had two candidates running,  The southern votes were split between them, while Lincoln got all of the northern votes, leading him to win the election.  This made the south very upset, as they knew that Lincoln was against slavery. A year later,  during the attack of fort Sumter, the Confederates fight against Lincolns ideas to protect their slavery. That was the whole purpose of the Civil War. The debate over slavery. In summary, the attack on Fort Sumter, a union fort, was due to the Confederate’s wanting for slavery and the Union’s opposition to it.
