One of the greatest weaknesses of Article IV (9) of the Articles of Confederation is the lack of a national currency. Underneath the Articles of Confederation, each state had the ability to create their own currency. This caused several different problems including:
- Trading between different states became difficult.
- Trading with foreign countries became difficult.
- There was no exchange rate/ organized system of understanding the values of these currencies in relation to each other.
This was one of the many flaws of the Articles of Confederation, which would eventually be replaced by the United States Constitution.
