In his 1943 paper “A Theory of Human Motivation,” Abraham Maslow provided a theory that aims to explain how human motivation usually operates. In it, he proposes a hierarchy of needs, with the following structure:
Physiological
Safety
Love/Belonging
Esteem
Self-actualization
The goal of his theory is to help the individual move through the levels so that he can eventually reach the self-actualization level. The army’s appeal is directed towards this level. The self-actualization level is reached when a person reaches his full potential, and becomes the best version of what he wanted to be.
