He did not discover North America. It was already discovered (considering the fact there was already a civilization of Native Americans there...).

Moreover, according to historians, he actually thought he truly made it to Asia (India to be specific), and apparently he insisted on this until he died. Christopher Colombus went down in history as a hero, but he was a psychotic murderer that enslaved the natives of the land he had thought he 'discovered'.

Many other explorers found their way to North America LONG before he did.

To answer your question, he got all the credit because he got direct attention from the king and queen of Spain, which made his trip renown all over when he 'discovered' the 'New World'.

Not very fun fact: Colombus day is actually considered the day of destruction of cultures and the day when the native's were enslaved and murdered. (from the viewpoint of the native's). This is why you may see some people behave sad or mad on Colombus day.
