On May 18th in 1886, the Supreme Court of the United States issued a landmark decision that upheld the constitutionality of racial segregation in the country, under the doctrine known as "separate but equal". The case began when Homer Plessy, an African-american citizen refused to sit in a car for blacks when he was riding the bus. The Court stated that the law that stated racial segregation in the country, was not unconstitutional. As a result of the Supreme Court's decision, public accommodation segregation based on race became a common thing everywhere in the country, even increasing in some areas, specifically in the South. This decision affected the lives of all African-Americans, who watched with horror how the government was ruling in favor of those who wanted to discriminate them.

Further Explanation:-

Plessy V. Ferguson was known as a landmark decision by the Supreme Court of the United States in the year 1896 which as this decision upheld the legality of racial segregation and this was done under the measure of separate but equal. This issue rose when Homer Plessy, who was a native African American was denied sitting in a car which was for blacks. Supreme Court didn't approve of the arguments that were made by Plessy that his rights which were provided to him under constitution were violated and Court further stated that a law which is implied merely a legal distinction that was going on between Blacks and Whites cannot be termed as unconstitutional. This verdict by the Supreme Court approved the doctrine of 'Separate but Equal" as a constitutional justification in relation to segregation. Various public interstate railroads were segregated as the verdict by Supreme Court sanctioned Buses, hotels as well as schools. The separate facilities that were provided to the African-American community were not as required standards and were consistently inferior as compared to people who belonged to the White Community. This was viewed as a contradiction to the vague declaration which stated ‘Separate but Equal' institutions.
