The evidence of Roman law and justice can be seen all over the world today. The legacy of Roman law is so immense that it is difficult to pick only a few instances of it. However, there are some examples that are useful in order to understand this impact. For example, the idea of "civil law" is derived from the Roman Ius Commune that was common during the Middle Ages all over western Europe. The Romans also developed the idea of regional differences when subscribing to a law. Finally, Roman law was instrumental in developing the laws of property and testament that we have nowadays.

The Romans might have lived a long time ago, but they had a significant influence on the way things are done today in the areas of:

  • legal codes

The Romans had ideas on government that is still used today such as:

  • elections to determine leaders
  • different branches of government
  • separate powers for different branches of government

The Romans also wrote and passed down laws that influenced the world due to the scale of their empire.

  • The Romans had a Constitution and the Roman code for instance, is the basis for Civil Law as we know it which is the most used legal system in the world.

  • Romans also had law courts that even though were not very accessible, could still decide on legal matters.

In conclusion, the Romans may be gone, but their legacy lives on through the many things thy influenced in law, government, architecture and arts.
