Particles which are much smaller than atoms are known as subatomic particles. Neutrons, protons, and electrons are subatomic particles.  Neutrons are neutral, protons are positively charged, and electrons are negatively charged particles

Hence, the name for a negative subatomic particle in an atom is an electron.
