In Beowulf, an Anglo-Saxon epic poem by John Lesslie Hall, Grendel's ancestry creates conflict in Beowulf because of his ancestor Cain, Grendel was exiled from God's light. Therefore, Grendel hated those who celebrated the god, which leads to his terrible internal conflict. He takes out his anger on the people of Heorot due to his hatred towards God. At last Grendel is surprised by the strength of Beowulf when fighting him and feels away leaving his shoulder behind as a trophy.
