A textbook store sold a combined total of 343 history and chemistry textbooks in a week. The number of chemistry textbooks sold was 59 less than the number of history textbooks sold. How many textbooks of each type were sold?

Let the number of History books be x. Then:-

x + x - 59 = 343

2x = 402

x = 201

So there are 201 History books and (201 - 59) = 142 Chemistry books.
