in order to measure population per square mile you can use a term called "population density." population density measures population in a specific area, and population per unit area or unit volume.
“Population Density” would be the correct term for (example); 25,000 per square mile. It literally means, for every square mile about 25,000 people (example) live within the proximity of that square mile.
