The formula for the slope of a line is [tex] \frac{y_{2}-y_{1}}{x_{2}-x_{1}} [/tex], or [tex] \frac{rise}{run} [/tex]. The 1's and 2's in the equation just represent different points on the line. For example, (5,5) could represent the twos. Note that you can switch the numbers and the slope would be the same, as negatives divide into positives.
Basically, you divide the difference in the y-values by the difference in the x-values. Let's say you had the points (1,2) and (7,10). We could calculate the slope below.
[tex] \frac{10-2}{7-1} =\frac{8}{6} =\frac{4}{3} [/tex]
Therefore, our slope would be 4/3. We could also switch around the 1's and 2's; the slope would be the same.
[tex] \frac{2-10}{1-7} = \frac{-8}{-6} =\frac{8}{6} =\frac{4}{3} [/tex]
