The analysis of DNA profiles using gel electrophoresis involves loading of the DNA samples in the well of the gel matrix. An electric potential gradient is present across the length of the gel that moves the DNA through the gel matrix. The gel is imaged under a UV lamp to show the presence of the required bands of DNA to give a qualitative estimate. The thickness of the band can give the quantitative measure of the amount of mRNA that is being made in the cell.
