The can swollen because the bacteria inside it doing anaerobic reaction. Anaerobic reaction will produce a gas that mostly will smell awful. The microorganism that fullfil the characteristic described above would be Salmonella and Proteus.
In this case, urease test will be helpful since Proteus has urease enzyme while Salmonella doesn't.
