1) The Byzantine Empire had kept Greek and Roman culture alive for nearly a thousand years after the fall of the Roman Empire in the west. It had preserved this cultural heritage until it was taken up in the west during the Renaissance.

Byzantine leaders kept Roman law and traditions. Artists restored Hellenistic art and literature. As the West started to diminish, scholars in the East maintained preserved libraries and created schools designed to teach ancient Greek and Roman history.
