The most important moralist of all was President Woodrow Wilson—the man who dominated decision making so totally that the war has been labelled, from an American perspective, "Wilson's War". In 1917 Wilson won the support of most of the moralists by proclaiming "a war to make the world safe for democracy. Here, there are two main reasons that are important to remember when addressing the question. The two things that really set Wilson off were the sinking of the Lusitania by the Germans and the Zimmerman Telegraph that created friction between the U.S. and Germany because of the intended harm to relations between the U.S. and Mexico.
