Nwoye is Okonkwo's eldest son who Okonkwo considers irredeemably effeminate and very much similar to his father, Unoka. When he was a child, Nwoye is object of his father's criticism and is emotionally unfulfilled.
Nwoye represents an innocent child, very sensitive to his surroundings and is shocked by the arbitrary cruelties being committed around him.
