the total energy in a system is 30J and the PE is 20J. what is the KE?

Total mechanical energy = potential energy + kinetic energy.

If we plug in our numbers:

30 = 20 + KE

Let's solve for KE:

30-20= KE

10 = KE

If we go back to the original equation:

30 = 20 + 10

Thus we know this is correct.
