The correct answers are: rising; declining.

Answer 1: Cohabitation is rising

In the United States, cohabitation rates have been rapidly rising in recent decades. Research indicates that couples (among all age groups) are increasingly showing a preference for cohabitation rather than marriage. Cohabitation has become more common recently because of several reasons including: weaker religious beliefs- where couples are more likely to be intimately involved and have children when they are unmarried; to avoid the economic, emotional and social consequences of divorce, avoiding the "ultimate" commitment of marriage, etc.

Answer 2: Marriage rates are declining

The main reason that marriage rates in the United States and other countries is declining is because divorce rates are rising- over 50% of marriages end in divorce. Besides that, marriage rates are also declining because of an increase in cohabitation, higher rates of financial independence in women and a lack of belief in the institution of marriage due to modern beliefs and weakening religious and conventional beliefs.

Cohabitation is increasing and marriage rates are decreasing with adults.

Further explanation:

It is true that cohabitation rates are increasing while marriage rates are decreasing among adults because people cohabit either to test their relationship before marriage or they don’t want to take the responsibility.

COHABITATION AND MARRIAGE

There are various factors which play important role in cohabitation like people who don’t want to give a commitment or are not ready to take economic, social and emotional responsibility so they cohabit. If we take into account marriage cases, then rates of divorce have been constantly increasing which is also one of the factors behind increasing rates of cohabitation.

One of the reasons behind declining marriage rates is divorce so people cohabit to check their compatibility and there are others reasons also like less religious belief, financial independence among women and lack of belief in marriage as a social institution.

So, there are several reasons behind increasing rates of cohabitation like weakening of religious beliefs and to avoid commitment and responsibilities.
