William Carney was the first African-American Congressional Medal of Honor winner.

The first winner of the Congress Medal of Honor was William Harvey Carney on May 23, 1900, when he was 37 years old after the events at Fort Wagner ended. Along with him, about twenty African-American men also showed up and were decorated later. Corney, despite the seriousness of his injuries in combat, had the courage to fight to save the colors of his flag in the battle mentioned above.
