I would say the Illiad and the Odyssey as these two are the most influential ones for the Western Literary Canon.

We can name Homer,s Iliad, on the occasion of the “menis” (the anger) of  Achilles, it portrays the war of the Greeks against the  Trojans, and Odyssey  the adventures of Odysseus in his  return home after the fall of Troy. Epos (meaning “word” “logos” from the verb έπω= λέγω) is a narrative poem. It narrates the heroic deeds of human and gods. It can also have a didactic context. The word hero appears in the Greek language with a twofold meaning. On one hand, it is used for denoting a divine being, who lived a mortal life, but after doing some great deed deserved to become a god. On the other hand, the hero stands for a great and brave warrior who is ready to give his life in order to gain immortal glory, and continue to live in the social sphere, in the memory of his descendants. Exactly this epic narrative survived and was exploited many times, as a very convenient and useful pattern in constructing the idea of a brave warrior, ready to die for his country when necessary.
