1) Europeans brough some goods to Africa (some produced goods, including rum), In Africa they would exchange those goods with the local rulers for slaves that the local rulers captured
2) they would bring the slaves to the US and force them to work there. In exchange they would receive some goods, such as sugar and tobacco
3) they would bring tobacco and sugar to Europe and sell it there.
