If the polygon consists of multiple shapes that you can split into, it will be easier to use those shapes' formulas. For example if you have an an irregular polygon which you can easily split into triangles, pentagons, circles, etc, you can find the area of those shapes and add them together to find the total area. But of course, this depends on how the irregular polygon's properties are.
