Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation to weaken the Confederacy's workforce and ultimately help the Union win by the abolishment of slavery in rebelling states. Lincoln strongly believed that slavery should be ended. He wanted to convert the political conflict of the American Civil War into a moral battle that will ultimately encourage the slaves employed by the Confederacy to join the uprising to weaken the forces of the confederates.
