TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILROAD encouraged settlement and stimulated tremendous economic growth in western regions. These were one of the greatest impacts of the said infrastructure.
Historically, in 1869, the presidents of the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroads met in Promontory, Utah and drove a "last ceremonial spike" into a rail line that connects their railroads. This made transcontinental travel through railroad possible in the United States.
