Republican Party
- An influential political party organized in 1848 that opposed the spread of slavery into the western territories. It was rooted in the growing conflict between the proslavery and antislavery forces in the United States and later intensified by the acquisition of new territories from Mexico and whether the slavery would be permitted in those territories.
