The Cambodian communist movement also known as the Khmer rouge emerged from the country’s struggle against French colonization  in the 1940s, and was influenced by the Vietnamese. However, its immediate rise to preeminence is attributed to the support it received from bitter Cambodians when the USA together with the republican forces bombed Cambodia resulting to death of thousands of people.

The rise of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia was triggered by the practices of the Vietnamese. This resulted in communist rebels setting up a brutal Communist government under the leadership of Pol Pot. In a ruthless attempt to transform Cambodia into a Communist society, Pol Pot's followers slaughtered 2 million people.
