Could you be a bit more specific about what you want to know?  electromagnets vary in their complexity.  

The simplest electromagnet might be a big steel nail wound with 100 or so turns of insulated copper wire, with 2 leads in the finished product.  If you pass a small current through the wire, the nail acts like a magnet and may pick up small steel or iron items.
